Optimized stereo digital image correlation setup for miniature round specimen: framework development and implementation

For the advancement of micro- and nano-technologies, multiaxial material testing at a small length scale is imperative. A novel miniature system (MMTS) under development for tubular specimen outer diameter (OD) as 1 mm. Because size MMTS, stereo-Digital Image Correlation (DIC) preferred strain measurement technique. Although theoretically, stereo-DIC length-scale independent, implementation stereo-DIC, particularly testing, faces experimental setup related challenges. this reason, although strongly recommended over 2D DIC, researchers are sometimes compelled to use latter. It shown in present study that difficulties, round can be overcome by systematic mathematical framework implementation. This addresses all decisions concerning implementation, such selections stereo angle, speckle size, camera position, sensor lens focal length, dimensions bodies, calibration grid etc., well analysis parameters, subset step size. Besides serving need building since developed treats variables, it used develop an optimized any application. Examples two general cases reported. Since serves tool solve challenges, will contribute wider adoption DIC.
